The biggest Demonstration ever!

Joyce Josephat Anjiri is 22 years old and from Tanzania. She's on her second year at the University of Dar es salaam where she's taking a BA in statistics. Currently she's in Copenhagen as a climate activist and a climate debt agent for MS ActionAid Denmark.

I remember it was a very nice sunny day on Saturday december 12th at 1:00pm at the city square near to the Danish Parliament where we had the biggest demonstration ever! It was incredible! More than a 100.000 people coming together with one big voice demanding Climate Justice. It was awesome to see people with different backgrounds, culture, races and colour coming together as one big family to stop the destruction of the world, which is the only home we have - "There is no Planet B" as one of the slogans said!

After we had listened to different motivational speeches we started marching from the Parliament to the Bella Centre where the United Nations Climate Change Conference is taking place. It was almost ten kilometers of walking and we had our van with big speakers pumping out good music. You can't imagine, it was impossible to sit still, it was so much fun!

Different journalists were following us taking video and pictures and we could dance and sing our slogan. It was absolutely brilliant... I have never attended a nice demonstration like that, everything was very organised in such a way that different organisations and groups were moving together with different moves and slogans and you could see policemen standing along the road for security reasons. Everything was well organized and under control, everyone was respecting one another in the highest order.

As climate debt agents, we were shining in our red suits, holding up banners, red balloons and handing out flyers to the people around. It was very colourful how we arranged ourselves with the big banner in front stating "Rich countries pay your climate debt". We had so much energy all of us and we had some sweets and snacks to eat along the way for cheering us up. It was so cool and we got a lot of support from our volunteers and friends as a result we had a very big group.

As we reached the Bella Centre; our final destination we sang our slogan and we could see so many people coming together shouting  to get the message through and dancing everywhere. We can only hope that everything is going to turn out alright in the negotiations, since there are so many things going on unnoticed and there is a lot of information at the moment. I hope the next four days will truly turn Copenhagen into Hopenhagen and it will be the centre of hope to everyone under the sun, where everyone could laugh and sing a new song that the bright future has come.
